{"id":47393,"date":"2013-10-10T10:11:49","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T08:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=47393"},"modified":"2013-10-10T10:15:58","modified_gmt":"2013-10-10T08:15:58","slug":"south-africas-richest-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/47393\/south-africas-richest-man\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s richest man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ventures magazine has listed the richest people in Africa, naming four South Africans, lead by asset manager, Allan Gray, who is amongst the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ventures, Africa has 55 billionaires with a combined fortune of $143.88 billion &#8211; an average net worth of $2.6 billion per person.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 55 billionaires listed by the magazine, 20 are from Nigeria, while South Africa features the second most billionaires with nine listed, and four in the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt features eight billionaires, while Algeria, Angola, Zimbabwe and Swaziland only have one billionaire each, According to Ventures.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">South Africa&#8217;s richest<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Allan Gray &#8211; $8.5 billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Ventures, Gray, founder of Allan Gray Limited, currently runs the largest privately owned asset manager in South Africa, with assets under management at approximately $30 billion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to inside sources at the company, Allan Gray\u2019s global mandate share portfolio has achieved an average annual return of 28% since 1974,&#8221; Ventures said.<\/p>\n<p>Gray is also the founder of Orbis, an asset manager in Bermuda, which he founded in 1989. Orbis has over $21 billion under management.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicky Oppenheimer &#8211; $6.5 billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As chairman of the world\u2019s largest diamond producer, <a title=\"De Beers\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4772-De-Beers\">De Beers<\/a>, the Oppenheimer family has held control of the company since Ernest Oppenheimer (Nicky\u2019s Grandfather) took the reins in 1927.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Oppenheimer made the decision to sell the family\u2019s 40% stake in De Beers to <a title=\"Anglo American\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4773-Anglo-American\">Anglo American<\/a> for $5.1 billion. Ernest Oppenheimer started a long legacy in mining, having also founded Anglo American in 1917.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johann Rupert &#8211; $6.1 billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Johann Rupert\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2319-Johann-Rupert\">Johann Rupert<\/a> made his billions through the sale of luxury goods, serving as chairman and CEO of <a title=\"Richemont\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4774-Richemont\">Richemont<\/a>, a Swiss holding company that controls brands such as Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, Alfred Dunhill, Montblanc and Chlo\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Rupert is also the chairman of <a title=\"Remgro\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2431-Remgro\">Remgro<\/a>, which has South African technology interests in the CIV group of companies, and an investment in <a title=\"SEACOM\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1983-Seacom\">SEACOM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rupert\u2019s extensive holding in luxury goods places his net worth at $6.1 billion, making him the third richest man in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christoffel Wiese &#8211;
