Cape Town’s rapid transport system, MyCiTi has integrated with Google Maps, giving city residents easier access to public transport routes.<\/p>\n
Google Maps currently offers the service of allowing users to establish detailed directions based on a \u2018point to point\u2019 search.<\/p>\n
“The results currently offered include walking and driving directions, but never before in South Africa have the results included public transport information for busses,” MyCiTi said.<\/p>\n
Through joining the Google Transit Partner programme, MyCiTi transport data and information has now been integrated into Google Maps, alolowing commuters to access routes and schedules directly from Google.<\/p>\n
“Perform a \u2018point to point\u2019 search anywhere in the City of Cape Town and you will be offered the opportunity to carry out your journey using the public transport layer on Google Maps,” MyCiTi said.<\/p>\n
“The result shows detailed information, allowing the commuter to select between different journey options based on their preferences.”<\/p>\n
According to World Wide Creative (WWC), the company behind the integration, it’s the first successful implementation of such a project in Africa, after a similar project launched by Metrorail failed to take off.<\/p>\n
This is the first step in taking the City of Cape Town’s transport systems further into the digital age, WWC said, with further integration into Google’s systems planned.<\/p>\n
