{"id":474426,"date":"2021-03-09T15:04:08","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T13:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=474426"},"modified":"2021-03-09T15:04:08","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T13:04:08","slug":"airlines-and-countries-extend-travel-bans-on-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/474426\/airlines-and-countries-extend-travel-bans-on-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Airlines and countries extend travel bans on South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UAE-based airline Emirates has announced that flights from South Africa will remain suspended until 20 March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This is in line with government directives that restrict the entry of travellers originating from South Africa into the UAE, the airline said in a notice published on its website.<\/p>\n<p>Emirates said that daily passenger flights to Johannesburg will resume from 11 March as <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/468402\/airlines-and-countries-extend-travel-restrictions-for-south-africa\/\">initially planned<\/a> &#8211; however, <strong>outbound flights will remain suspended.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Emirates remains committed to serving our customers in South Africa, and we look forward to resuming passenger services when conditions allow,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We continue to work closely with all relevant authorities in this regard, and will endeavour to provide our customers with needed support to adjust their travel plans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Virgin Atlantic has also extended its ban on flights to and from South Africa and <strong>may not resume flights until April<\/strong>, as British Airways had announced the suspension of all South Africa flights until <strong>16 April<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A number of countries have also indicated that travellers from South Africa will be barred from entering &#8211; a sign that the country could be facing reputational damage as a result of the 501Y.V2 variant of Covid-19, which has been referred to as the &#8220;South African variant&#8221; abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The 501Y.V2 variant has unfairly led to South Africa being targeted as a destination for tourists to avoid, local tourism authorities have said.<\/p>\n<p>While the variant was first discovered and reported by scientists in South Africa, it has also been found to be spreading in 48 other countries.
