{"id":478093,"date":"2021-03-24T11:41:13","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T09:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=478093"},"modified":"2021-03-24T11:41:13","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T09:41:13","slug":"johannesburg-to-rename-william-nicol-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/478093\/johannesburg-to-rename-william-nicol-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Johannesburg to rename William Nicol Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Johannesburg has announced its intention to rename William Nicol drive to Winnie Madikizela Mandela drive.<\/p>\n<p>In a notice published on social media on Wednesday (24 March), the city said that the proposed re-naming is in terms of its approved policy on the naming of streets and other public places.<\/p>\n<p>It further called for comments or representations from interested and affected people or parties.<\/p>\n<p>William Nicol Drive was named after the Dutch-Reformed minister and Transvaal administrator at the time of its construction. Please use contacts on the poster to engage on this process <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/JoburgUpdates?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#JoburgUpdates<\/a> ^NS <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QockRmaIXS\">pic.twitter.com\/QockRmaIXS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 City of Joburg (@CityofJoburgZA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CityofJoburgZA\/status\/1374625056756789249?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 24, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The proposed name change has been over a year in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/436105\/joburgs-william-nicol-drive-set-to-get-a-name-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making<\/a><\/strong>, and City mayor Geoff Makhubo said that the road would be renamed \u2018in time\u2019 following the public participation process and confirmation with Madikizela-Mandela\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Arts and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa announced a number of name changes in the Eastern Cape which he indicated were for transformation purposes.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said that the transformation of the naming landscape in South Africa is \u2018a critical component of the heritage landscape as a whole\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a need for the name changes as this is part of a government programme to transform South Africa\u2019s heritage landscape.
