Apple said that its new operating system, named OS X Mavericks, focussed on technologies, features, and apps and will help users to get more out of their battery, memory, and GPU.<\/p>\n
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said that Apple made \u201cdeep and broad changes across the system\u201d. \u00a0“This one is a doozy,” he said.<\/p>\n
Federighi said that the new OS X system offer improved resource management, dramatically improved battery life, memory management, and graphics performance.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven if you take our 13-inch Macbook Air and all you do is install Mavericks, you\u2019ll get up to an hour more of browsing on a single charge,\u201d Federighi said.<\/p>\n
Mavericks also includes a feature called \u201ccompressed memory\u201d, which Federighi said can fit 6GB of data into 4GB of system RAM.<\/p>\n
These performance improvements are in addition to other new features such as multiple tabs in Finder, Mac\u2019s file explorer application, and file tagging.<\/p>\n
Federighi also previously announced that putting an app in full-screen mode will no longer render the desktop on the other monitor useless.<\/p>\n
The upgrade to Mavericks is free for Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow Leopard users, and is available immediately.<\/p>\n
Previously, the upgrade for OS X 10.8, or Mountain Lion, cost $19.99.<\/p>\n
Macs dating back to 2007 (iMac and MacBook Pro) are supported, Federighi said.<\/p>\n
