{"id":4819,"date":"2012-01-27T11:43:36","date_gmt":"2012-01-27T11:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=4819"},"modified":"2012-01-27T11:45:13","modified_gmt":"2012-01-27T11:45:13","slug":"sa-banks-vs-22seven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/4819\/sa-banks-vs-22seven\/","title":{"rendered":"SA banks vs 22seven"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African banks Absa and <a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307757-FNB-First-National-Bank\" target=\"_blank\">First National Bank<\/a> left their corners swinging after Thursday&#8217;s (26 January 2012) launch of the new money management service 22seven, warning customers not to give their credentials to third parties.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Absa<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/note.php?note_id=10151222964795473\" target=\"_blank\">Absa posted a note on its Facebook page<\/a> on Thursday, not only warning South Africans against 22seven, but also revealing that they will be launching their own personal financial management tool.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">FNB<\/h3>\n<p>Michael Jordaan, CEO of FNB, also said on Thursday that 22seven is a \u201ccool concept,\u201d but that the \u201crisk [is] all yours\u201d if you disclose your password to any third party.<\/p>\n<p>In response to our questions on the fraud protection FNB offers to customers that use online banking FNB said, \u201cFNB is unlikely to reimburse losses arising from customers who have given their login and password details to a third party.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4820\" style=\"width: 516px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/22seven-Michael-Jordaan-tweets.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4820\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4820\" title=\"22seven-Michael-Jordaan-tweets\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/22seven-Michael-Jordaan-tweets.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/22seven-Michael-Jordaan-tweets.jpg 506w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/22seven-Michael-Jordaan-tweets-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">22seven&#39;s Michael Jordaan tweets<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">What about \u201cview only\u201d profiles?<\/h3>\n<p>However, some South African banks, let you create a different online banking profile (or \u201coperator\u201d) with read-only permissions o accounts.<\/p>\n<p>According to FNB, this can be done on their portal under the settings tab by clicking add user and only allowing \u201conly view\u201d permissions to the accounts concerned.<\/p>\n<p>This raises the obvious question: if you give out these read-only credentials, are you still unprotected should fraud occur on your account?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe client is responsible for the transactions executed on the secondary profile,\u201d FNB said. \u201cEach fraud case would be investigated and a decision related to liability is always made on a case by case basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that Absa offers similar functionality, but an Absa spokesperson said that Absa&#8217;s multiple account operators feature does in fact not support &#8220;view only&#8221;
