{"id":490589,"date":"2021-05-14T12:00:28","date_gmt":"2021-05-14T10:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=490589"},"modified":"2021-05-14T12:00:28","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T10:00:28","slug":"3-new-subjects-to-be-trialled-at-schools-in-south-africa-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/490589\/3-new-subjects-to-be-trialled-at-schools-in-south-africa-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"3 new subjects to be trialled at schools in South Africa this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Basic Education says that it will trial a number of new subjects at South African schools this year.<\/p>\n<p>In its annual performance plan for 2021\/2022, the department said that forms part of the &#8216;immediate implementation of a curriculum with skills and competencies for a changing world in all public schools&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>These are the planned changes and how they will be introduced:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>New African languages\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The department indicated that it will be introducing previously marginalised African languages at schools.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The process of incrementally refocusing the teaching and learning of the previously marginalised African languages in South African schools has led to the introduction of <strong>KiSwahili<\/strong> as a Second Additional Language (SAL) in Grades 4\u201312 in 90 schools,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>The department added that the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Kiswahili SAL for Grades 4\u20139 has already been planned and that a toolkit has been developed for the respective grades.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Entrepreneurship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nationally, 540 schools will be monitored for implementing compulsory entrepreneurship education, the department said.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is being driven by president Cyril Ramaphosa and is expected to officially form part of the curriculum by 2024.<\/p>\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/352253\/entrepreneurship-should-be-a-subject-at-south-african-schools-ramaphosa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emphasised<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>the importance of South Africans embracing a culture of entrepreneurship as the country aims to attract R1.2 trillion in investment over five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must look at what needs to be done to promote and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and an entrepreneurial culture.
