The wider Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index fell as much as 10%.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin is still up 14% this year but that trails commodities as well as some European and Asian share gauges. The proximal cause of Tuesday\u2019s weakness was unclear &#8211; one theory was that the recovery of a high-profile Bitcoin ransom by the US showed the token isn\u2019t beyond official control to the extent claimed by its biggest proponents.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that investigators \u201ccould trace the untraceable and seize it might be undermining the libertarian, free-of-government-control case,\u201d said Jeffrey Halley, a senior market analyst at Oanda. The implications of that may have provoked the selling, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bitcoin&#8217;s year-to-date return is sliding below traditional assets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Bitcoin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-496795\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Bitcoin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"814\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Bitcoin.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Bitcoin-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Bitcoin-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The US recovered almost all the Bitcoin ransom paid to the perpetrators of the cyber attack on Colonial Pipeline Co last month in a sign that law enforcement is capable of pursuing online criminals even when they operate outside the nation\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n<p>Strategists such as Halley and Evercore ISI\u2019s Rich Ross are watching key technical levels for Bitcoin. Halley said a break below $30,000 could lead to \u201canother capitulation.\u201d Ross sees a test of support around $29,000.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin has plunged from a peak of almost $65,000 in mid-April, casting a pall over the cryptocurrency sector. The selloff was exacerbated by billionaire Elon Musk\u2019s public rebuke of the amount of energy used by the servers underpinning the token.
