{"id":49709,"date":"2013-11-19T22:59:46","date_gmt":"2013-11-19T20:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=49709"},"modified":"2013-11-19T23:01:38","modified_gmt":"2013-11-19T21:01:38","slug":"south-africas-billionaires-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/49709\/south-africas-billionaires-revealed\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s billionaires revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research reveals that South Africa&#8217;s population of nine US dollar billionaires has an accumulated wealth of $30 billion, up from $25 billion just a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2013, found that the global billionaire population reached a record 2,170 individuals in 2013, with a combined net worth of $6.5 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>The report also shows that 810 individuals became billionaires since the 2009 global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa ranks 41st on the global list of billionaires, and is behind Egypt in Africa, with the North African country featuring at 26 on the list.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49722\" style=\"width: 507px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Africa-billionaires.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49722\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49722 \" alt=\"Africa billionaires\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Africa-billionaires.png\" width=\"497\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Africa-billionaires.png 497w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Africa-billionaires-300x239.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Africa billionaires<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Egypt boasts 19 billionaires, at a total wealth of $32 billion, with Nigeria third in Africa with seven billionaires and a total wealth of $20 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Although Egypt has the largest number\u00a0of billionaires in the region, the average\u00a0net worth of South African billionaires is\u00a0nearly double that of Egyptian billionaires,\u00a0at US$3.3 billion, as compared to Egypt&#8217;s US$1.7\u00a0billion.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0Wealth-X and UBS, Africa&#8217;s billionaire population is at 42, with a net worth of $101 billion. The report found that 48% of those individuals were self made, against 45% for those billionaires in SA. 22% of South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0billionaires were as a result of inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>The average age for Africa&#8217;s billionaires is 65, against 63 in South Africa, with 89% being male in the Southern African country.<\/p>\n<p>The most significant industry for billionaires in South Africa was finance, banking and investment (22%), with metals and mining (22%), and real estate (11%) also\u00a0prominent.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, the US, with 515 billionaires is far ahead of the pack, and is followed by China, with 157 billionaires, with Germany (148), the UK (135). and Russia (108) rounding out the top five countries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49723\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Global-billionaires.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49723\" class=\" wp-image-49723 \" alt=\"Global billionaires\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Global-billionaires.png\" width=\"599\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Global billionaires<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Additional key global findings from the report:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The global billionaire population rose by 0.5% and their total wealth increased by 5.3% in the past year.<\/li>\n<li>Europe is home to the most billionaires (766 individuals). However, North America has the most billionaire wealth (US$2,158 billion).<\/li>\n<li>Asia contributed the largest number of new billionaires (18) this year, followed by North America (11).<\/li>\n<li>As of 2013, the average net worth of the world\u2019s billionaires is US$3 billion.<\/li>\n<li>Globally, there are 111 individuals who each have a net worth that exceeds US$10 billion.
