Telkom<\/a>\u00a0has earmarked the end of 2014 as a date for the\u00a0commercial launch of fibre to the home, with\u00a0the trial of a 100Mbps offering “proceeding well”.<\/p>\n

In March 2012, information emerged that Telkom was set to roll out fibre to the home (FTTH) services in selected areas of Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Cape Town as part of a proof of concept for FTTH.<\/p>\n

The group said that technical trials were underway in two business parks, three gated communities, and a ‘leafy suburb’. The\u00a0home trials were running in La Pama in Durban; Plantations in Durban; and Somerset in Gauteng.<\/p>\n

In June, Telkom CEO\u00a0Sipho Maseko<\/a>\u00a0said the group’s 100Mbps fibre to the home (FTTH<\/a>) pilot was producing \u201cenormous speeds\u201d, with a financially viable business case possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cFibre is a key enabler of Telkom\u2019s strategic broadband plans and the company is therefore pleased that the 100Mbps Fibre to the Home trial is proceeding well, with the 45 participating clients,” Telkom told BusinessTech.<\/p>\n

The company has also availed an interest register on its website for all customers to record their interest for future fibre services and products. The information gleaned from the trial and interest register will inform the pricing and availability of Fibre to the Home products and services.<\/p>\n

“Telkom is working towards commercial launch of Fibre to the Home before the end of 2014,” the telco said.<\/p>\n
