{"id":49771,"date":"2013-11-20T15:47:19","date_gmt":"2013-11-20T13:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=49771"},"modified":"2013-11-20T15:51:53","modified_gmt":"2013-11-20T13:51:53","slug":"e-tolls-to-help-fight-apartheid-legacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/49771\/e-tolls-to-help-fight-apartheid-legacy\/","title":{"rendered":"E-tolls to help fight apartheid legacy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Transport Minister\u00a0<a title=\"Dipuo Peters\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/10177-Dipuo-Peters\">Dipuo Peters<\/a>\u00a0fired a political broadside on Wednesday (20 November) suggesting that the\u00a0implementation of\u00a0e-tolls on Gauteng&#8217;s freeways could help\u00a0reverse the legacy of colonialism and apartheid planning.<\/p>\n<p>The minister\u00a0announced that\u00a0e-tolls will commence on 3 December 2013, as part of\u00a0the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.<\/p>\n<p>In delivering a progress report on the much\u00a0criticized initiative,\u00a0Peters said: &#8220;We have learnt many lessons from this project, one of them being that it will take some time to reverse the legacy of colonialism and apartheid planning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Apartheid spatial planning never envisaged a situation where Gauteng will be as populated as it is today, mainly due to the influx of people from different provinces for economic reasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Government has listened\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peters said that by dropping tariffs for road\u00a0users,\u00a0government had listened to the\u00a0public.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Government has made several concessions as part of our efforts to minimise the financial burden on the users of the Gauteng e-tolled road network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tariffs have been reduced and registered public transport exempted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Treasury has allocated funds to the project to ensure reductions in the toll tariffs. We have moved from 66 cents per kilometer to the current 30 cents for light motor vehicles for registered road users who are in possession of an e-tag.&#8221; Peters said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an indication that indeed this government cares for its people and has listened to the concerns raised by the public,&#8221; the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wish to thank those who have already registered and are in possession of their e-tags. We encourage motorists who haven&#8217;t registered to do so.
