{"id":498663,"date":"2021-06-15T14:24:01","date_gmt":"2021-06-15T12:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=498663"},"modified":"2021-06-15T14:25:57","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T12:25:57","slug":"ramaphosa-in-lockdown-meetings-as-advisors-push-for-move-to-level-3-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/498663\/ramaphosa-in-lockdown-meetings-as-advisors-push-for-move-to-level-3-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa in lockdown meetings as advisors push for move to level 3 for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa will hold a series of lockdown-related meetings on Tuesday (15 June) as the country considers additional restrictions as it battles a third wave of Covid-19 infections.<\/p>\n<p>State broadcaster the SABC said that Ramaphosa will <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/ramaphosa-locked-in-several-coronavirus-related-meetings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first<\/a><\/strong> meet with the\u00a0National Coronavirus Command Council where the Department of Health will make a presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Acting health minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane has said that her department will make <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/498137\/health-department-pushes-for-tighter-lockdown-restrictions-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommendations<\/a><\/strong> to increase restrictions as it seeks to motivate behavioural changes from South Africans.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa is also expected to meet with the country&#8217;s provincial premiers as well as his cabinet.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/national\/health\/2021-06-15-breaking-news-government-advisers-recommend-tighter-restrictions-booze-ban-to-curb-covid-19-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessDay<\/a><\/strong> reported that the government\u2019s Ministerial Advisory Committee on Covid-19 recommended a return to lockdown level 3, imposing similar restrictions to those implemented in December during the second wave of infections.<\/p>\n<p>This would mean an earlier evening curfew, a reduction on the size of public gatherings, and restrictions around the sale of alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Basic Education said that it does not currently have any plans to close schools, as this would not help curb the spread of Covid-19. It added that a significant amount of teaching time had already been lost over the last 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>However, it said that the ultimate decision would be made with guidance from the Department of Health and Cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa reported 5,552 new cases of Covid-19 on Monday (14 June), taking the total reported to 1,752,630.<\/p>\n<p>Deaths have reached 57,879, while recoveries have climbed to 1,611,447, leaving the country with a balance of 83,304 active cases.
