Draft regulations issued by Icasa have detailed that the split of free airtime for political parties will be determined by their size – leaving newcomers, Agang and EFF, crying foul.<\/p>\n
This is according to the Sunday Times, which has quoted party representatives speaking out against the draft regulations, calling the policy unfair, with Agang stating that the move “entrenches the position of the parties that are already there\u201d.<\/p>\n
EFF spokesman, Floyd Shivambu, told the Sunday Times that by giving airtime to political parties according to representativeness it was as if the broadcasters were already taking sides.<\/p>\n
According to the regulations, all SA broadcasters will have to allocate one-minute slots to political parties to spread their message.<\/p>\n
The division of allocated airtime is determined by the number of seats parties have in the national parliament and provincial legistlatures, as well as the number of seats the parties are contesting provincially and nationally.<\/p>\n
According to the Sunday Times, this would mean that the ANC and DA would score the most airtime, while parties like COPE, the IFP and the ACDP would feature above Agang and the EFF.<\/p>\n
The broadcasts will air from the announcement of the election date until the results have been announced, the Sunday Times reported.<\/p>\n
