{"id":500771,"date":"2021-06-24T10:18:08","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T08:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=500771"},"modified":"2021-06-24T10:18:08","modified_gmt":"2021-06-24T08:18:08","slug":"south-africa-continues-to-lose-thousands-of-millionaires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/500771\/south-africa-continues-to-lose-thousands-of-millionaires\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa continues to lose thousands of millionaires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Credit Suisse has published its annual wealth report for 2021, showing how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted wealth around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The group estimates that 4.4% of total global household wealth was lost between January and March 2020 and global wealth per adult declined by 4.7%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, reassured by the prompt action of governments and central banks, financial markets regained confidence and the losses in equity markets were largely reversed by the end of June.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That much was understandable. But what happened in the second half of 2020 was unforeseen,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Share prices continued on an upward path, reaching record levels by the end of the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>House prices rose at rates not seen for many years. This has led to major gains in household wealth throughout the world. The net result was that $7.4 trillion was added to global household wealth during the year. At the end of 2020, it totalled $418.3 trillion, up 7.4%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Wealth per adult rose 6% to a new record high of $79,952 (R1.13 million).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Depreciation of the US dollar flatters these gains: adjusting for exchange rate changes, total wealth would have risen by 4.1% and wealth per adult by 2.7%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-500773 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"827\" height=\"850\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-2.png 827w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-2-292x300.png 292w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-2-768x789.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 827px) 100vw, 827px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While this is positive news at the global level, the report shows that wealth in South Africa was not as fortunate in avoiding the impact of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Credit Suisse estimates that there are <strong>58,142 dollar millionaires in South Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While this is above estimates made by other groups such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/459046\/south-africa-is-losing-thousands-of-millionaires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New World Wealth<\/a><\/strong>, it is approximately 3,000 fewer millionaires than reported by Credit Suisse in the previous year (2019: 61,000).<\/p>\n<p>Wealth per adult amounted to $20,308 (R289,300) in South Africa at the end of 2020, and the country remains the outlier on the continent as the average for Africa as a whole is $7,371 (R105,004).<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-500777 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1217\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-3.png 1217w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-3-300x110.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-3-1024x377.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-3-768x283.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wealth-3-1200x442.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1217px) 100vw, 1217px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The current composition of assets in South Africa is similar to 2000. Financial assets were 68.1% of total assets in 2000 and 64.4% in 2020.
