MTN Group says it has noted reports that Turkish mobile phone operator, Turkcell, has re-filed its lawsuit against the local operator in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n
Shares in MTN climbed 0.5% to R196 in early afternoon trade on the JSE.<\/p>\n
Reuters reported that Turkcell\u00a0had opened the case on Tuesday in the South Gauteng high court in Johannesburg,\u00a0seeking damages for losses that it said it had incurred.<\/p>\n
“At this stage, MTN cannot comment further as we have not received or viewed the court papers,” MTN said in a press statement on Wednesday (27 November)<\/p>\n
“Although we don\u2019t have details of the case, MTN continues to believe that there is no legal merit to Turkcell’s claim and will accordingly oppose it.”<\/p>\n
Turkcell filed a $4.2 billion lawsuit in Washington last year alleging the Johannesburg-based company used bribery to win a mobile license in Iran that was first awarded to Turkcell.<\/p>\n
The Turkish operator dropped the case in May, citing a recent US Supreme Court ruling that hurt its case.<\/p>\n
