Cell C has entered into a new Mobile Virtual Network Enabler (MVNE) deal with Mirage Telecoms and Comverse that will see the network act as a cellular wholesaler for future Mobile Virtual Networks (MVNs) in South Africa.<\/p>\n
The deal means that banks, retailers, insurers, and other organizations will be able to offer clients cellular voice and data services using Cell C’s network and Mirage Telecom’s back-end infrastructure.<\/p>\n
As part of the agreement, Comverse will supply its telecommunications software to Mirage Telecom, with Cell C creating a wholesale supply relationship with Mirage, the groups said.<\/p>\n
This will allow Mirage Telecom to take on new MVNO partners and supply core network access.<\/p>\n
The platform will provide cellular network services to potential new Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) throughout South Africa.<\/p>\n
“South African mobile users will now see new offerings from some of their favourite and most trusted brands,” said Prins Mhlanga, Executive Director at Mirage Telecom.<\/p>\n
“These brands will have the freedom and flexibility to develop unique products and services,” Mhlanga said.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a conference in Sandton on Thursday (28 November), acting Cell C CEO, Jose Dos Santos revealed significant gains in Cell C’s position in the South African market.<\/p>\n
According to Dos Santos, Cell C achieved more than 1.2 million gross connections in October, with 400,000 net additions – noting that, to date, the operator had reached 13 million subscribers for the first time.<\/p>\n
The acting lead also noted that the operator had exceeded its targets in rolling out sites to boost and stabilise its network; this after numerous complaints from consumers were reported surrounding network quality and dropped calls.<\/p>\n
Dos Santos said that 110 new sites were on air, taking total sites on the group\u2019s network to 4,040.<\/p>\n
