{"id":502019,"date":"2021-06-29T14:04:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T12:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=502019"},"modified":"2021-06-29T14:04:25","modified_gmt":"2021-06-29T12:04:25","slug":"heres-how-much-money-the-average-worker-gets-paid-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/502019\/heres-how-much-money-the-average-worker-gets-paid-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how much money the average worker gets paid in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stats SA has published the latest Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) for Q1 2021, showing what workers are getting paid across the various sectors in the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to the data, the average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector was flat quarter-on-quarter and were also higher than in the same time in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The survey showed a quarter-on-quarter increase of R3 or (0.0%) in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector from R23,119 in November 2020 to <strong>R23,122<\/strong> in February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Year-on-year, average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased by 3.2%, from an average of R22,395 in February 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-502021 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1026\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings.png 1026w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-300x54.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-1024x183.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-768x137.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1026px) 100vw, 1026px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Basic salary\/wages paid to employees decreased by R4.1 billion or (-0.6%) from R651.2 billion in December 2020 to R647.2 billion in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This was largely due to decreases in key industries such as business services, manufacturing, construction, transport and electricity.\u00a0 However, there were increases in trade, mining and community services, StatsSA said.<\/p>\n<p>Drops in these industries also meant that year-on-year, basic salary\/wages decreased by R19.6 billion or (-2.9%) between March 2020 and March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Bonus and overtime paid to employees decreased by R22.7 billion (-25%) from R90.9 billion in December 2020 to R68.1 billion in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-502027 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1028\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-2.png 1028w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-2-300x104.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-2-1024x355.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Earnings-2-768x266.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1028px) 100vw, 1028px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Take home pay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The average monthly take-home pay in South Africa was a fraction higher (0.1%) in May 2021, when compared with a year ago \u2013 a time when the country faced a challenging economic predicament at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the latest <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/500431\/the-average-take-home-pay-in-south-africa-right-now-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BankservAfrica Take-home Pay Index (BTPI)<\/a><\/strong> shows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe progress to recovery has been swift.
