{"id":506390,"date":"2021-07-15T13:51:20","date_gmt":"2021-07-15T11:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=506390"},"modified":"2021-07-16T09:51:45","modified_gmt":"2021-07-16T07:51:45","slug":"shoprite-on-how-looting-will-impact-shoppers-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/506390\/shoprite-on-how-looting-will-impact-shoppers-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Shoprite on how looting will impact shoppers in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"text aem-GridColumn aem-GridColumn--default--10\">\n<div class=\"cmp-text\">\n<p>The Shoprite group says that some of its stores have been impacted by looting and violence in parts of Gauteng and KZN, but that outlets in other parts of the country are continuing to operate as normal.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Thursday (15 July) the group, which owns major retailers Shoprite and Checkers, said that it was working around the clock to re-stock and rebuild affected stores in KZN and Gauteng where unrest erupted earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>The retailer said that it will re-open stores for business in these areas as soon as it is safe for both customers and employees.<\/p>\n<p>In other parts of the country all the group\u2019s stores are fully operational and fully stocked, it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we have been affected by the violence, looting, arson and vandalism,\u00a0we\u00a0are\u00a0doing everything in\u00a0our\u00a0power to restock shelves as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shoprite further condemned the unrest and lawlessness which it said will affect the\u202flivelihoods\u202fand lives of millions of law-abiding\u202fcitizens and which targets businesses, big and small, that make positive contributions to the economy and the creation of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mayhem and destruction are everyone\u2019s loss, particularly in a country ravaged by a poor economy and joblessness, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. The riots are only making our challenges, including food security, greater,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are especially grateful to our loyal customers, many of whom have reached out and offered to help with clean-up operations\u00a0and want\u00a0to assure our customers that we are working day and night to continue to feed and support the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pick n Pay and Woolworths<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both Pick n Pay and Woolworths have also confirmed that some stores in Gauteng and KZN were impacted by the violence, but that the rest of the outlets across South Africa remained operational.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn common with other retailers, some of Pick n Pay\u2019s stores have been affected by the disruption and damage in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng,\u201d said David North, chief strategy officer at Pick n Pay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety of our customers and staff is always our first priority, and, as a precaution, we have temporarily closed a number of stores in the affected areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had disruptions to deliveries in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, and we are working hard with our teams to restock our stores as soon as the situation calms and the safety of our people can be assured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is too early to give an assessment of the trading and financial impact, but our stores continue to be open and trading in areas not affected by the disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Woolworths spokesperson said that the group was seeing a similar situation across its stores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWoolworths can confirm that some of our stores in have been closed due to the protest action. The safety of our staff and customers remains our highest priority.
