Telkom has appointed Serame Taukobong as group chief executive designate.<\/p>\n
The telecommunications group said that Taukobong’s appointment will take effect from 1 October 2021. He will assume the group chief executive role after Sipho Maseko\u2019s official exit on 30 June 2022.<\/p>\n
Taukobong is a member of the Telkom executive team and has led the mobile business for the last three years. He has experience in the mobile sector and Telkom’s own mobile business has grown from 5 million to over 15 million subscribers during his term as head of the mobile business.<\/p>\n
Maseko will help ensure the orderly transition into the role during the remainder of his tenure, Telkom said. Maseko joined Telkom on 1 April 2013 at a time when the organisation faced severe challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring his eight-year tenure, he turned the business around and evolved it from a traditional fixed business to a portfolio of businesses which comprises the mobile, IT, wholesale infrastructure business and the masts and tower portfolio.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder his leadership, the group has had many remarkable strategic achievements in the execution of its broadband led strategy which are reflected in the group\u2019s current healthy position,” it said.<\/p>\n
Telkom\u2019s mobile business grew to become the third-largest in South Africa during Maseko\u2019s tenure, with more than 15 million customers generating R20 billion revenue.<\/p>\n
He also helped oversee Telkom\u2019s migration from ADSL to fibre, and the number of homes connected with fibre now exceeds the number of homes connected with copper, Telkom said.<\/p>\n
