Vodacom has informed M-Pesa customers via SMS that they will not be able to transact over Nedbank ATMs from 15 January 2014 \u201cuntil further notice\u201d.<\/p>\n
The mobile operator asked clients to use Nedbank branches and M-Pesa outlets to move money to or from their accounts.<\/p>\n
This announcement comes after Vodacom revealed in November 2013 that it plans to relaunch M-Pesa during the first quarter of 2014.<\/p>\n
Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub said at the time that M-Pesa has \u201ca couple of hundred thousands customers\u201d in South Africa.<\/p>\n
Nedbank launched M-Pesa in partnership with Vodacom<\/a> in August 2010, and now boasts more than\u00a01.2 million registered users.<\/p>\n Asked about the announcement, a Vodacom spokesperson told MyBroadband that it is part of the revamp that they are working on.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ll be giving a full update in the new year,\u201d Vodacom said.<\/p>\n Earlier in December, Nedbank said it aims to re-launch its mobile money service, M-Pesa, onto a new IT platform that will interface directly into banks.<\/p>\n \u201cNedbank and Vodacom have drawn valuable learnings and insights from the\u00a0M-Pesa roll-out, and the\u00a0M-Pesa product is being re-launched in the near future onto a new IT platform,\u201d said\u00a0Ilze Wagener<\/a>, head of digital innovation and payments at Nedbank.<\/p>\n \u201c[The platform] will interface directly into banks and will include the expansion of the distribution channel to add on more points of sale and more transactional capabilities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Nedbank looks to refresh M-Pesa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Vodacom targets M-Pesa in SA, again<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n SA\u2019s most-used mobile money platforms<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nNedbank’s refresh plans<\/h3>\n
