{"id":511854,"date":"2021-08-10T11:04:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T09:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=511854"},"modified":"2021-08-10T11:04:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-10T09:04:00","slug":"automation-the-holy-grail-of-popia-data-access-requests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/industry-news\/511854\/automation-the-holy-grail-of-popia-data-access-requests\/","title":{"rendered":"Automation \u2013 The holy grail of POPIA data access requests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While many companies have made good strides towards achieving full POPIA compliance, there is not a single company that can claim to be the posterchild for complete compliance.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to OpenText regional vice president in Africa Julie Tregurtha, who was speaking on Business Talk with Michael Avery.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0axRzDMU2gM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Watch the OpenText episode of Business Talk.<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tregurtha explained that data subject access requests (DSARs) are arguably the biggest challenge keeping privacy management professionals up at night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProcesses for responding to DSARs have been very manual, slow, and error-prone, often resulting in non-compliance,\u201d said Tregurtha.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, leading research firm Gartner found in a 2019 survey that two thirds of businesses take at least two weeks to respond to a single DSAR and that these are often done manually \u2013 costing over R20,000 on average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow imagine you have 100,000 customers and a mere 1% of them ask you for the information you have on them. That\u2019s a cost of R20 million.
