{"id":512306,"date":"2021-08-11T12:21:17","date_gmt":"2021-08-11T10:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=512306"},"modified":"2021-08-11T12:21:17","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T10:21:17","slug":"heres-how-much-money-top-ceos-and-executives-earn-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/512306\/heres-how-much-money-top-ceos-and-executives-earn-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how much money top CEOs and executives earn in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professional services company PwC has published its report on South African executive directors for 2021, highlighting how much top management is earning in the country right now.<\/p>\n<p>The report analysed executive pay during the period from 1 March 2020 to 28 February 2021, focusing primarily on executive remuneration among companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).<\/p>\n<p>It also includes high-level analyses of companies listed on seven selected sub-Saharan African stock exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>As directors\u2019 fees rarely follow a standard distribution curve, PwC used quartile\/percentage range rather than averages. The firm also focused on &#8216;total guaranteed package&#8217;\u00a0 (TGP) which represents the portion of total remuneration regardless of employee performance.<\/p>\n<p>An examination of TGP fees paid across the JSE shows that the median salary for chief executives was <strong>R5.17 million <\/strong>over the period.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the median pay for chief financial officers was <strong>R3.34 million<\/strong>, and the median pay for executive directors was <strong>R3.32 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PWC.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-512320 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PWC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PWC.png 503w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PWC-300x252.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 503px) 100vw, 503px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Super caps\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Super caps represent the top 10 companies on the JSE. As of 28 February 2021, these companies accounted for 71% of the exchange&#8217;s total market capitalisation.<\/p>\n<p>The salaries paid to executives at these salaries reflect their size and value, with some chief executives earning more than five times the JSE median.<\/p>\n<p>An examination of fees paid across the JSE&#8217;s super caps shows that the average salary for chief executives was <strong>R24.1 million.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The average pay for chief financial officers was <strong>R16.1 million<\/strong>, and the average pay for executive directors was <strong>R23 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PwC-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-512324 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PwC-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1007\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PwC-2.png 1007w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PwC-2-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PwC-2-768x381.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1007px) 100vw, 1007px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Short-term incentives\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Short-term incentives (STIs) are cash payments that are intended to remunerate executive directors for the achievement of annual business and personal goals.<\/p>\n<p>In its analysis, PwC found that the Covid-19 pandemic created significant uncertainty and as a result impacted remuneration decisions.
