{"id":514680,"date":"2021-08-20T12:41:41","date_gmt":"2021-08-20T10:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=514680"},"modified":"2021-08-20T12:43:53","modified_gmt":"2021-08-20T10:43:53","slug":"shock-crime-statistics-for-south-africa-including-big-increase-in-murder-and-hijacking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/514680\/shock-crime-statistics-for-south-africa-including-big-increase-in-murder-and-hijacking\/","title":{"rendered":"Shock crime statistics for South Africa &#8211; including big increase in murder and hijacking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police minister Bheki Cele has published the crime statistics for Q1 2021\/2022, with a significant increase in cases reported across several crime categories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The double-digit increase in most crime categories is attributed to the impact of the adjusted lockdown levels and distorted crime trends,&#8221; said Cele.<\/p>\n<p>The police minister said that while the country had seen a &#8216;holiday from crime&#8217; during the higher level 5, 4 and 3 lockdowns, the move to lighter restrictions has led to &#8216;exaggeratedly high&#8217; crime levels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we will not sweep the high and unnatural figures under the carpet, we will instead bring to the fore a holistic picture of comparing the 2021\/2022 Q1 crime figures to a &#8216;normal period&#8217; two years ago where there was no lockdown.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The increases, therefore, reflect the difference between Q1 2018\/19 and Q1 2021\/22, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big increase in murder and other crimes\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, sexual offences and all categories of assault registered a 60.6% increase, compared to the corresponding period of the previous financial year.<\/p>\n<p>Murder alone registered a 66.2% increase &#8211; which translates to 5,760 people killed between 1 April and 30 June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Cele said that the most common areas that murders are committed in South Africa are on the street, in open fields, parking areas and abandoned buildings (2,531 murders).<\/p>\n<p>A total of 1,385 murders were committed at a person&#8217;s home, while 206 murders were committed at liquor outlets.<\/p>\n<p>The most common reasons for murder include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arguments;<\/li>\n<li>Robberies;<\/li>\n<li>Mob-justice killings;<\/li>\n<li>Gang-related killings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/sapsHQ?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#sapsHQ<\/a> Murder <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CrimeStats?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CrimeStats<\/a><br \/>\n66,2 % increase compared to 6,7% increase of same period in 2019\/2020<br \/>\n66,2% translates to 5 760 people killed between 1 April and 30 June 2021<br \/>\nNP <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/K7u8BXYv9K\">pic.twitter.com\/K7u8BXYv9K<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SA Police Service \ud83c\uddff\ud83c\udde6 (@SAPoliceService) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SAPoliceService\/status\/1428660831563272197?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 20, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Cele said that the South African Police Service also reported an increase of 72.4% in incidents of rape &#8211; translating to 10,006 victims of rape during the period between 1 April and 30 June.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, both common assault and assault with grievous bodily harm registered double-digit increases, translating to a combined 76,936 cases.
