The ANC is repeating promises,” he said.

The DA said that the ANC’s economic policy failed to establish an environment in which businesses can grow and jobs can be created.

“Unemployment has become entrenched at 25% (narrow definition), with more than 2.2 million workers having given up looking for a job altogether. At the current anaemic economic growth rates, this picture will not change,” James said.

The DA alerted to research on South Africa’s growth potential, showing that targeted interventions to ease skills constraints, increase savings and investment, increase competition, and reduce costs in the economy, can boost GDP growth to 8% by 2025 .

In this growth scenario, the South African economy could add 5.8 million jobs and reduce unemployment to 11%, the political party said.

“To achieve this, we will need commitments from government beyond boosting jobs numbers through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). Feedback on the EPWP from the Department of Public Works shows that it has only reached around 68% of the targeted 4.5 million EPWP opportunities (2 million full-time equivalents) promised in 2009.”

“The ANC cannot demonstrate how it will deliver on the new inflated promise of 6 million EPWP jobs by 2019,” James said.

Agang

The ANC’s 2014 election manifesto was a predictable laundry list of promises while it expected South Africans to conveniently forget past failures, Agang SA said.

South Africans were also asked to forget unmet promises and the ruling party’s habit of putting itself ahead of the national interest, Agang SA said in a statement.

“Can the ruling party be so tone deaf to the disbelief and distrust citizens have towards it that it expects us to believe, without reason, that it will be able to meet these promises any better than it has in the past?”

“Enough is enough. We have had enough of promises over the last 20 years. We need a fresh start. Let us use our power to say in one voice that 20 years of promises is enough.”

(With Sapa)

More on unemployment

SA unemployment drops slightly

Matriculants warned about job prospects

Unemployment the most pressing economic issue: Marcus

Unemployment up in SA

Unemployment increases in SA

SA unemployment rises to 25.5%

The Democratic Alliance says that President Jacob Zuma’s ANC manifesto plans will not reduce unemployment.

[23
5194,1875,2061,7299,26,3651
post-51575","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-agang","tag-anc","tag-democratic-alliance","tag-elections-2014","tag-headline","tag-unemployment
["GET
