{"id":51593,"date":"2014-01-13T14:12:31","date_gmt":"2014-01-13T12:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=51593"},"modified":"2014-01-13T14:28:45","modified_gmt":"2014-01-13T12:28:45","slug":"telkom-shares-soar-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/51593\/telkom-shares-soar-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom shares soar 5%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a second successive day, shares in Telkom advanced more than 5% on the JSE, after the group pointed to\u00a0an urgent need to address its cost base, including its human capital requirements.<\/p>\n<p>In afternoon trade on Monday (13 January), Telkom advanced as much as 5.43%, or R1.75 to R33.95 on the local bourse, having added\u00a05.89% on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Telkom have swelled more than 100% over the past year, having\u00a0broken through the R30 level for the first time in more than two years, last week.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom hit\u00a0an all time worst trade of \u00a0R11.34 in May 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The All Share Index traded 0.5% higher on Monday, to 45,756 points.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg reported last week that\u00a0<a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a>\u00a0CEO\u00a0<a title=\"Sipho Maseko\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2088-Sipho-Maseko\">Sipho Maseko<\/a>\u00a0is planning to sack as many as 1,000 managers as part of a\u00a0strategy to turn the struggling telco around \u2013 a process which he described to Bloomberg as being a \u201ccomplex transformation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, in addition to its 21,000 employees, Telkom also uses approximately 3,000 contracted employees.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Friday (10 January), Telkom stressed, however, that to\u00a0date a decision regarding staff reduction has not been reached and therefore no action has been implemented.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Maseko admitted\u00a0that the Telkom Mobile business was going through \u201ca very difficult time\u201d, and is in discussions with\u00a0parties over future operations.<\/p>\n<p>Maseko stressed that Telkom would continue to be a full-service operator.<\/p>\n<p>The group was subsequently linked to talks with <a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1641-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> and <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a>, although neither operator confirmed any discussions had taken place.<\/p>\n<p>However, analysts remain skeptical over Telkom&#8217;s progress. &#8220;At this point in time, I would prefer to wait and see how the Telkom turnaround progresses before forming a strong opinion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is certainly opportunity to de-risk the mobile business and drive efficiencies \u2013 we would like to better understand the next generation network strategy and associated capex in order to better understand the company\u2019s future prospects,&#8221;
