{"id":516450,"date":"2021-08-27T09:24:20","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T07:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=516450"},"modified":"2021-08-27T09:24:20","modified_gmt":"2021-08-27T07:24:20","slug":"government-looking-at-mandatory-vaccines-in-south-africa-health-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/516450\/government-looking-at-mandatory-vaccines-in-south-africa-health-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Government looking at mandatory vaccines in South Africa: health minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health minister Joe Phaahla says that his department is discussing the introduction of mandatory Covid-19 vaccines in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing media on Friday (27 August), Phaahla said that this is a matter that has been raised for official consideration, with the health department now discussing the conditions under which mandatory vaccines may be possible.<\/p>\n<p>He said that <strong>no official determination has yet been made<\/strong>. Phaahla said that in his personal view it is unlikely that an official regulation will be introduced which states that everyone must vaccinate.<\/p>\n<p>However, he said it is possible that certain jobs such as the services sector and the entertainment sector could require mandatory vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Phaahla said that the government&#8217;s Ministerial Advisory Committee is also looking at the possibility of booster doses for those who have received the one-dose Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Vrv8KTCVRY\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>WHO science council member Salim Abdool Karim has said that Covid-19 vaccines should be made mandatory in South Africa, with exceptions only for those who cannot take a vaccine for strong medical reasons or religious reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Karim told <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/516200\/vaccines-should-be-mandatory-in-south-africa-expert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eNCA<\/a> <\/strong>that the severity and seriousness of the pandemic mean that the option to take a vaccine is no longer a personal choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you (consider) the original virus that jumped from bats and came to humans, it probably just came into one person,\u201d he said. \u201cThat one person has caused all the mayhem we have seen today, and probably didn\u2019t even know that they caused it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karim said that this is also the case for the Covid-19 variants which are currently spreading across the world, with these variants likely starting in just one or two people at most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo even one unvaccinated person poses that risk to the whole world. If that\u2019s the case, and it\u2019s a very strong one, then it can\u2019t be simply a matter of personal choice.
