{"id":517352,"date":"2021-09-01T07:55:52","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T05:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=517352"},"modified":"2021-09-01T07:55:52","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T05:55:52","slug":"cigarette-sales-ban-to-have-big-tax-hit-on-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/517352\/cigarette-sales-ban-to-have-big-tax-hit-on-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Cigarette sales ban to have big tax hit on South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British American Tobacco sees South Africa failing to meet tobacco excise revenue targets after a lengthy ban on the sale of the products swelled illegal sales.<\/p>\n<p>The country will probably generate R11.5 billion ($791 million) in duties from cigarettes and related products in the year through March 2022, the company\u2019s East &amp; Southern Africa unit said in a presentation to lawmakers on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>That compares with a National Treasury budget estimate of R13.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Illegal sales make up more than 50% of the overall cigarette market in South Africa, according to BAT. Contraband sales will deprive the government of 19.1 billion in unpaid duties in the current fiscal year, it said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Cigs-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-517354 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Cigs-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"814\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Cigs-1.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Cigs-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Cigs-1-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>South Africa outlawed the sale of tobacco for almost five months in 2020, one of the government\u2019s more controversial measures to control the coronavirus pandemic.
