{"id":517456,"date":"2021-09-06T17:03:25","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T15:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=517456"},"modified":"2021-09-06T17:03:25","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T15:03:25","slug":"heres-how-many-south-africans-are-moving-to-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/517456\/heres-how-many-south-africans-are-moving-to-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how many South Africans are moving to the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK immigration and travel has been significantly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, with far fewer South Africans making the move abroad compared to previous years, data from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sableinternational.com\/blog\/uk-visas-down-by-73-in-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sable International<\/a><\/strong> shows.<\/p>\n<p>The data recorded for entry clearance visas granted outside the UK shows a sharp drop in applications made overseas.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of December 2020, a total of 996,636 entry clearance visas were granted, compared to 3,171,721 in 2019. This represents a decrease of 69%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since 2012, there have generally been year-on-year increases in the number of visitors to the UK,&#8221; Sable international said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, in 2020 the number decreased by 79% (1.9 million), with only 506,644 visitor visas granted compared to the previous year\u2019s over 2.4 million.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>17,288 <\/strong>of these visitor visas were granted to South Africans &#8211; the 10th most of any country.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Visitor.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-517518 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Visitor.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Visitor.png 572w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Visitor-229x300.png 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Work visas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the number of visitor visas has declined, data from the UK&#8217;s Home Office shows that the country remains a popular destination for South Africans who are moving for work, to study or to join family members.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 125,173 work visas were approved by December 2020, Sable International said. This was made up of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>77,760 skilled worker visas \u2013 down 35% (67,386) from the previous year;<\/li>\n<li>26,500 temporary worker visas \u2013 down 39% (16,967);<\/li>\n<li>1,669 high-value visas \u2013 down 70% (3,935).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of these business visas, a total of <strong>4,012 applications<\/strong> were granted to South Africans in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Sable-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-517514 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Sable-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"574\" height=\"754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Sable-1.png 574w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Sable-1-228x300.png 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Family visas\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were 40,255 family visas granted, a decrease of 28% (15,388). These included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>8,230 dependants joining or accompanying a family member &#8211; down 12% (1,151);<\/li>\n<li>19,234\u00a0EEA family permits &#8211; down 58% (26,458).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A total of<strong> 1,497 applications<\/strong> were granted to South Africans.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Family.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-517520 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Family.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Family.png 570w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Family-229x300.png 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Total South Africans who have moved\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Data published by UK\u2019s office for national statistics in March 2021, shows that a significant number of South Africans have made a move to the UK permanently.<\/p>\n<p>The data \u2013 which is based on the country\u2019s annual population survey \u2013 shows the number of overseas-born people (by country) who live permanently in the UK as of the end of June 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The survey shows that country with the largest overseas population is India, with an estimated 847,000 Indian people currently living in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>This is followed by Poland (746,000 people) and Pakistan (519,000 people) who ranked in second and third place respectively.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa is ranked in ninth position, with an estimated 229,000 people currently living in the country.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, there were 255,000\u00a0South Africans living in the UK as at the end of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/349577\/this-is-how-many-south-africans-have-moved-to-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019<\/a><\/strong>. This means that there has been an effective net decline of 26,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>While this is a significant drop, similar declines were seen for other countries &#8211; likely as a result of the href=\"https:\/\/www.swlondoner.co.uk\/news\/21062021-uk-the-second-most-popular-destination-for-emigrating-south-africans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SWLondoner<\/a> <\/strong>shows that over 53,000 South Africans live in London alone.<\/p>\n<p>Wandsworth is the borough with the highest number of South Africans, an estimated 6,000, while Merton reported approximately 3,000 and Lambeth, Kingston and Richmond each reported around 2,000.<\/p>\n<p>Emigrations are not uncommon during the pandemic according to a study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and CareerJunction, as around 59% of South Africans were still willing to move to another country for work but this was a dip from a 72% willingness level in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Young and highly educated South Africans were also willing to move abroad with 56% of young people and 61% of highly educated people in the country saying they would be willing to relocate during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a
