Justice Project South Africa lead, Howard Dembovsky<\/a> has called for the\u00a0dismissal\u00a0of Sanral<\/a> spokesman, Vusi Mona<\/a>, for “highly disrespectful and arrogant” comments made to a member of the public who voiced concern over the much maligned e-toll system.<\/p>\n

The call follows an on-air comment made by Mona in response to a query raised by a Talk Radio 702 listener on Wednesday (15 January).<\/p>\n

The listener SMSed into the station asking the Sanral spokesman how people could make sure that text messages received from Sanral regarding e-tolls were not a scam.<\/p>\n

Mona responded: “Very easy. Raise your IQ a little bit…\u201d<\/p>\n

“As a public servant and an employee of a State Owned Enterprise, Mr Mona has a duty to demonstrate respect for members of the public and he should know better than to openly and blatantly insult a member of the public who was simply asking a legitimate question of him,” JPSA’s Dembovsky said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“At no time during the course of his interview with [702’s] Gushwell Brooks did Mr Mona apologise for his utterance. Instead, he tried to justify it by saying that people should ‘exercise common sense’.”<\/p>\n

According to JPSA, Mona has alluded to “low IQs” on a number of occasions when talking to journalists about e-tolls, and has called on Mona to resign, or failing that, for the ministry of transport to dismiss him.<\/p>\n

“Clearly [Mona] has no respect for the public he is supposed to serve \u2013 not hurl insults at,” the group said.<\/p>\n
