{"id":51809,"date":"2014-01-17T08:40:38","date_gmt":"2014-01-17T06:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=51809"},"modified":"2014-01-17T08:40:38","modified_gmt":"2014-01-17T06:40:38","slug":"playstation-4-xbox-one-drive-strong-holiday-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/hardware\/51809\/playstation-4-xbox-one-drive-strong-holiday-sales\/","title":{"rendered":"PlayStation 4, Xbox One drive strong holiday sales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NPD Group reported Thursday that new consoles from Sony and Microsoft powered a winning holiday season for the videogame industry in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The newest consoles from Microsoft and Sony are off to a tremendous start,&#8221; said NPD analyst Liam Callahan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Xbox One led consoles sales in December, while PlayStation 4&#8217;s two-month total makes it the best selling console during the two-month launch window.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The rival consoles were released in November and eagerly snapped up by players.<\/p>\n<p>Nintendo&#8217;s Wii U consoles also fared well during the holidays, with December logging its best monthly sales since its release about 13 months earlier, Callahan said.<\/p>\n<p>Videogame hardware sales more than offset a 17 percent drop in sales of game software to $1.31 billion in December, according to NPD.<\/p>\n<p>For the full year, game software sales were down 11 percent from 2012 to $6.34 billion.
