Some key members include Coca-Cola, Spur, Pick n Pay, the SPAR Group, and Woolworths.<\/p>\n<p>The group defines &#8216;unnecessary plastics&#8217; as plastic Items that can be avoided or replaced by a reuse model while maintaining utility. These plastics have limited social utility, for which no alternative is required and can be phased out without significant behavioural or infrastructural change.<\/p>\n<p>It also defines &#8216;problematic plastic&#8217; as having the following characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Those plastics that are not reusable, recyclable (technically and\/or economically not recyclable) or compostable;<\/li>\n<li>Those plastics that contain, or which manufacturing process requires, hazardous chemicals that pose a significant risk to human health or the environment;<\/li>\n<li>Those plastics which hinder or disrupt the recyclability or compostability of other items;<\/li>\n<li>Those plastics for which there is a high likelihood of being littered or ending up in the natural environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Plastics to be phased out\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first group of plastics that members have pledged to phase out in 2021 and 2022 include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oxo-degradable plastics<\/li>\n<li>PVC bottles, pallet wrap, and labels<\/li>\n<li>PVC or PET shrink sleeves on PET bottles<\/li>\n<li>Plastic stickers on fruit and vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Thin barrier bags for fruit and vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Thin barrier bags used at tills<\/li>\n<li>Plastic straws<\/li>\n<li>Plastic stirrers<\/li>\n<li>Single-use plastic cutlery, plates and bowls<\/li>\n<li>Cotton buds with plastic stems<\/li>\n<li>Plastic lollipop sticks<\/li>\n<li>Plastic microbeads in cosmetics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The publication of this list of problematic and unnecessary plastics is a significant moment for the South Africa Plastics Pact,&#8221; said David Rogers, head of international programmes at non-profit group WRAP.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It shows what can be achieved through the focused collaborative action fostered by plastics pacts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rogers cited the UK, where plastics pact members have made significant progress towards eliminating our initial target list of eight problematic and unnecessary items, seeing a 40% reduction in these plastics since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The group said that the second list of plastics that will be phased out is set to be published in due course.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/519600\/a-look-at-fords-upgraded-factory-in-south-africa-which-can-make-a-ranger-every-2-minutes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A look at Ford\u2019s upgraded factory in South Africa \u2013 which can make a Ranger every 2 minutes<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The South African Plastics Pact has published its first list of &#8216;problematic or unnecessary&#8217; plastics which it aims to phase out in 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":280463,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9876],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-519812","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/519812","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=519812"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/519812\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":520010,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/519812\/revisions\/520010"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/280463"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=519812"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=519812"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=519812"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
