The Midrand offices of\u00a0the\u00a0SA\u00a0National Roads Agency\u00a0<\/em>(Sanral) have been evacuated for the second time in four days.<\/p>\n

The e-tolling system has not been impacted, with only the call centre affected, Sanral said.<\/p>\n

Sanral issued the following statement on the incident:<\/p>\n

Another incident has occurred at the Central Operations Centre this afternoon. It should be noted that the system is fully operational and that only the Call Centre services are affected.<\/p>\n

Electronic Toll Collection, whose staff occupy the building, will be issuing a statement shortly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Eyewitness News reported that e-tolling collection company, ETC, confirmed that the road agency’s Midrand offices had been evacuated Friday afternoon, but could not confirm why.<\/p>\n

An investigation is believed to be underway, while Jacaranda FM’s news team has reported that two people have been taken to hospital as a safety precaution.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0Tuesday (21 January), staff at the road agency’s head office had to\u00a0evacuate\u00a0after an unidentified white powder was delivered to the premises, feared initially to be anthrax.<\/p>\n

Employees were evacuated, with some 30 employees having to be decomtaminated and hospitalised as a precaution.<\/p>\n

The incident impacted Sanral’s e-tolling systems, which were halted during the evactuation, but were back up and running the following day.<\/p>\n

Justic Project South Africa head, Howard Dembovsky, called the feigned chemical attack “cowardly”, requesting that the\u00a0perpetrators face the full might of the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoax or real, JPSA condemns this incident in the strongest possible terms and wishes all Sanral employees affected by this incident well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
