The Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters<\/a> has\u00a0condemned\u00a0a spate of threats on\u00a0SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral<\/a>‘s) offices as an attack on the country’s constitution.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Sanral’s Central Operations Centre (COC) in Samrand\u00a0had to be evacuated after a bomb threat was reported.<\/p>\n

The premises was also evacuated on Tuesday and Friday in the previous week, after a suspicious powder, initially thought to be anthrax, was found.<\/p>\n

Peters condemned the attempts to destabilise the operations of Sanral, and called\u00a0on law enforcement authorities to act swiftly in their investigation aimed at identifying those responsible for these threats to the safety of the personnel at the COC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are elements in society hellbent on undermining the peace and security of their fellow citizens. These backward and uncivilised individuals have elected to ignore all platforms made available to them by our Constitution to raise whatever concerns they may have,” said Minister Peters.<\/p>\n

The Minister says government, consistent with its commitment to uphold democratic practices, has never threatened or intimidated any individual or organised formations who have previously demonstrated to share their views on the system of tolling.<\/p>\n

Opposition To Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa<\/a>) has however accused Sanral of using deliberate intimidation to create a climate of fear amongst Gauteng road users in order to coerce them to register their cars and get e-tags.<\/p>\n

“This is an attack not only on Sanral, but on our Constitution, which guarantees peace and security for all citizens of our Republic. All peace-loving citizens must condemn these regressive tendencies. We call on law enforcement authorities to do all within their powers to bring the perpetrators of these acts to book,” said Peters.<\/p>\n

The minister said that such illicit acts are diverting the attention of law enforcement authorities and emergency medical personnel from their core mandate of ensuring peace and stability; and the health of citizens in the country.<\/p>\n

“Someone’s life could be in real danger at the time such hoaxes are made. Instead of attending to those whose lives are genuinely in danger, officers are preoccupied with attending to these false alarms,” Peters said.<\/p>\n
