{"id":52325,"date":"2014-01-28T15:05:41","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T13:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=52325"},"modified":"2014-01-28T17:08:47","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T15:08:47","slug":"santral-must-stop-lying-to-itself-outa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/52325\/santral-must-stop-lying-to-itself-outa\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanral must stop lying to itself: Outa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Opposition to urban tolling alliance (<a title=\"Outa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1949-OUTA-Opposition-to-Urban-Tolling-Alliance\">Outa<\/a>) says that road agency <a title=\"Sanral\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1722-SANRAL-South-African-National-Roads-Association-Limited\">Sanral<\/a> can&#8217;t keep deceiving itself into believing its controversial e-tolling system is a legitimate success.<\/p>\n<p>The statement comes on the back of a peaceful demonstration by thousands of motorists and motorcyclists on Saturday (25 January), which the e-toll protest group described as proof that the public are fed up the e-tolling system and are &#8220;refusing to participate in the ill-conceived scheme&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Outa spokesman John Clark spoke out against comments by Sanral CEO, <a title=\"Nazir Alli\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1735-Nazir-Alli\">Nazir Alli<\/a>, touting close to a million people registering for e-tags as an indication the system is legitimate, and that other motorists should submit to and accept the system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese comments indicate that the authorities are not seeing the warning signs of a discontented society. Such self-deception risks inviting unintended consequences,\u201d Clarke said.<\/p>\n<p>Outa described Sanral&#8217;s call for citizens to &#8220;respect the law and accept e-tolls&#8221; as &#8220;primitive rule by law&#8221;, rather than progressive constitutional rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanral can try carrots and sticks to force compliance, but e-tolling cannot be sustained by manipulation of emotions.
