{"id":524570,"date":"2021-09-28T13:26:27","date_gmt":"2021-09-28T11:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=524570"},"modified":"2021-09-28T13:26:27","modified_gmt":"2021-09-28T11:26:27","slug":"how-much-money-the-average-worker-gets-paid-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/524570\/how-much-money-the-average-worker-gets-paid-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How much money the average worker gets paid in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Statistics South Africa has published its Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) for Q2 2021 \u2013 showing what workers are getting paid across the various sectors in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that basic salary\/wages paid to employees increased by R7.3 billion (1.1%) from R646.7 billion in March 2021 to R653.9 billion in June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This was mainly due to increases in the business services, trade, manufacturing, transport, construction and electricity industries. However, a decline was reported in the mining and community services industries.<\/p>\n<p>Year-on-year, basic salary\/wages increased by R55.2 billion between June 2020 and June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Bonus and overtime paid to employees decreased by R7.4 billion (-10.8%) from R68.5 billion in March 2021 to R61.2 billion in June 2021, StatsSA said.<\/p>\n<p>The average salary paid to employees in the formal sector was up marginally by 1.7% quarter on quarter from R23,127 in February 2021 to <strong>R23,526<\/strong> in May 2021. This is 9.7% higher compared to the same period in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-524574\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage.png 694w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-300x54.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-524582 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-1024x699.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-1024x699.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-768x524.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-1536x1048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-2048x1397.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wage-1200x819.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the latest salary data from the BankservAfrica Take-home Pay Index shows that the average salary for employees after-tax is <strong>R12,129<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>BankservAfrica pointed out that average salaries during the height of the Covid-19 first wave ended up higher than usual.<\/p>\n<p>Lower paid casual workers bore the brunt of the cost-cutting by large companies at that stage, while higher-paid monthly employees did not suffer the same level of reductions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, in that context, the average take-home pay for July 2021 is robust, despite staying on the same level. The number of people receiving a paycheck did not change significantly between June and July either. The monthly equivalent number of payments made declined by less than -0.1% and by R1,092 in value from June 2021,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job losses\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The QES data also shows that jobs in the formal non-agricultural sector decreased by 86,000 in the second quarter of 2021, bringing the total number of persons employed in the formal non-agricultural sector in South Africa to approximately 9.57 million.<\/p>\n<p>This was largely due to decreases in the following industries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Community services (-65,000),<\/li>\n<li>Manufacturing (-15,000),<\/li>\n<li>Construction (-7,000),<\/li>\n<li>Electricity (-1,000)<\/li>\n<li>Business services (-1,000).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Jobs-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-524580 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Jobs-1-1024x699.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Jobs-1-1024x699.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Jobs-1-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Jobs-1-768x524.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Jobs-1-1536x1048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Jobs-1-2048x1397.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Jobs-1-1200x819.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Full-time employment decreased by 17,000 jobs year-on-year between June 2020 and June 2021.
