{"id":52481,"date":"2014-01-31T00:05:53","date_gmt":"2014-01-30T22:05:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=52481"},"modified":"2014-01-31T09:14:16","modified_gmt":"2014-01-31T07:14:16","slug":"what-is-really-happening-behind-closed-doors-at-sanral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/52481\/what-is-really-happening-behind-closed-doors-at-sanral\/","title":{"rendered":"What is really happening behind closed doors at Sanral?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (<a title=\"Outa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1949-OUTA-Opposition-to-Urban-Tolling-Alliance\">Outa<\/a>) aims to put pressure on the\u00a0South African National Roads Agency Limited (<a title=\"Sanral\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1722-SANRAL-South-African-National-Roads-Association-Limited\">Sanral<\/a>) to come clean about the \u00a0number of\u00a0e-tags registered, revenue collected, and its handling of complaints.<\/p>\n<p>Outa spokesperson, John Clarke said\u00a0that it is making good progress in collating and analysing the complaints it has received from angry motorists, following the implementation of e-tolls on Gauteng&#8217;s freeways on 3 December 2013.<\/p>\n<p>These complaints, Clarke said, will be mediated to the Public Protector before the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month,\u00a0Outa said it had received complaints running into the thousands from people regarding incorrect and threatening e-toll bills being sent to them via e-mail and SMS.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What is abundantly clear so far is that allegations of dishonesty and the violation of the right of access to information is supported by the evidence&#8221; said Clarke.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So let&#8217;s put pressure on Sanral CEO Mr Alli to tell us what is really happening behind the closed doors of the operations centre in terms of e-tags registered, revenue collected, handling of complaints, etc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Outa has also questioned Sanral&#8217;s claims that close on one million e-tags had been registered to date. The\u00a0auditor general\u2019s office was set to begin its audit of Sanral this in January, ahead of the financial year end on March 31.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49828\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DA-E-tolls-Billboard.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49828\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49828\" alt=\"DA E-tolls Billboard\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DA-E-tolls-Billboard.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DA-E-tolls-Billboard.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DA-E-tolls-Billboard-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DA E-tolls Billboard<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Legal pressure on Sanral<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Outa also noted on its Facebook page that a private group, known as \u201cFAIR E-TOLL BILLING\u201d has mandated Findlay &amp; Niemeyer Attorneys to proceed with a matter compelling Sanral to comply with the Consumer Protection Act, and the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though OUTA are not driving this Declaratory Order, they will provide supporting evidence from many complainants, and offer their moral support for this independent legal case,&#8221; Clarke said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the private group aims to have this Declaratory Order heard in Court in February.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The benefits to you (and fellow citizens) is enormous from this Court Order. It establishes the consumer fairness boundary that Sanral must abide by. It sends a significant compliance message to Sanral from the Courts.
