The Democratic Alliance (DA) has urged minister of communications, Yunus Carrim, to control the “perpetual management crisis” at the SABC, and not let exiting CEO, Lulama Mokhobo, escape without consequence.<\/p>\n

This is according to a statement issued by DA shadow minister of communications, Marian Shinn, following Mokhobo’s confirmed resignation from the broadcaster on Monday (3 January).<\/p>\n

The City Press first reported the speculated resignation on Wednesday (29 January), citing a tweet by the Broadcasting, Electronic Media and Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) stating that she had stepped down.<\/p>\n

“The confirmation yesterday of the resignation of the group chief operating officer, Ms Lulama Mokhobo, clearly illustrates how dysfunctional the SABC has become,” Shinn said.<\/p>\n

A provisional report from Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, in late November 2013 called out Mokhobo and acting COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng for unlawful and improper conduct surrounding salary hikes, as well as abuse of power.<\/p>\n

“The SABC is without a doubt in a state of crisis and options such as judicial management should be considered,” Shinn said.<\/p>\n

“I urge Minister Carrim, who has no doubt seen the Public Protector\u2019s report and has received regular feedback from the task team he appointed to look into the SABC, to publicly state what interim measures can immediately be taken to arrest the management crisis at the broadcaster and what government intervention is being contemplated in the near future.”<\/p>\n

Shinn added that Mokhobo’s resignation shouldn’t enable her to slip away from the possibility of maladministration charges that may be put to her.<\/p>\n

During the past year the financial state of the SABC failed to meet the financial performance targets set out in the government guarantee, failed to improve revenue and sponsorship targets and received a disclaimer of opinion – the worst possible finding by the Auditor-General.<\/p>\n

Mokhobo had three years left of her five-year contract, with a total annual employment package at about R4 million.<\/p>\n

“This is not an executive management performance that deserves a golden handshake,” Shinn said.<\/p>\n
