{"id":52940,"date":"2014-02-10T17:34:25","date_gmt":"2014-02-10T15:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=52940"},"modified":"2014-02-10T17:34:51","modified_gmt":"2014-02-10T15:34:51","slug":"why-digital-tax-is-good-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/52940\/why-digital-tax-is-good-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Why digital tax is good for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Legal expert Graham Gilfillan welcomed the South African government\u2019s new electronic services regulations which will introduce 14% VAT on digital products and services from 1 April 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The regulations have been published by finance minister Pravin Gordhan for comment, and follow the proposals he made in his 2013 budget speech to impose VAT on foreign businesses who \u201csell e-books, music and other digital goods and services\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to Gilfillan the new digital tax is a very good thing. He explained that money from digital purchases often leave the country without any benefit to South Africa\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince when is not paying tax okay,\u201d asked Gilfillan. \u201cThis issue of not paying tax on consumer goods is out.
