Eskom has announced that load shedding on Monday (25 October) will hit earlier than expected, following more breakdowns at its power stations.<\/p>\n
Load shedding was initially expected to start at 21h00 on Monday night and run through until 05h00 Tuesday morning (26 Oct) – but it will now start at 18h00, the utility said.<\/p>\n
“Unit 1 of Kusile & Matimba Unit 5 tripped, taking 1300MW of the grid. Loadshedding will continue as previously communicated. An update will be issued should the need arise,” Eskom said.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Monday, Eskom laid out its load shedding forecast for the next 18 months, showing that it expects rolling blackouts to feature heavily in South Africa for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n
Most of Eskom\u2019s coal power stations are operating past the midway of their operational life, resulting in high levels of breakdowns. The power utility will rely heavily on diesel usage to meet its operational requirements, it said.<\/p>\n
