{"id":53282,"date":"2014-02-18T12:58:33","date_gmt":"2014-02-18T10:58:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=53282"},"modified":"2014-02-18T13:10:39","modified_gmt":"2014-02-18T11:10:39","slug":"south-africas-4g-growth-projections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/53282\/south-africas-4g-growth-projections\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s &#8220;4G&#8221; growth projections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research finds that &#8220;4G&#8221; (LTE) will account for 39% of total mobile data traffic by 2018, compared to 9% at the end of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast,\u00a060% of mobile connections in South Africa will be &#8216;smart&#8217; connections by 2018, up from 20% in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile data traffic in South Africa will have a compound annual growth of 53% in the next five years and will reach an annual run rate of two Exabytes by 2018, the technology group forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>The projected increase in mobile traffic is partly due to continued strong growth in the number of mobile Internet connections, such as personal devices and machine-to-machine (M2M) connections, which will reach 98 billion by 2018, approximately 1.8 per capita for the country.<\/p>\n<p>From 2013 to 2018, Cisco anticipates that mobile traffic growth will be double fixed traffic growth in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Cisco believes that there will be 40 million mobile users \u00a0in South Africa by 2018, up from 38 million in 2013.\u00a0Globally, there will be 4.9 billion mobile users, up from 4.1 billion in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Video will account for 78% of South Africa&#8217;s mobile data traffic by 2018, compared to 50% at the end of 2013.
