{"id":53353,"date":"2014-02-19T14:24:55","date_gmt":"2014-02-19T12:24:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=53353"},"modified":"2014-02-19T14:25:53","modified_gmt":"2014-02-19T12:25:53","slug":"cell-c-winning-market-share-from-mtn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/53353\/cell-c-winning-market-share-from-mtn\/","title":{"rendered":"Cell C winning market share from MTN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JSE-listed Blue Label Telecoms on Wednesday (19 February) provided a breakdown of its prepaid\u00a0airtime distribution for the country&#8217;s major operators, revealing a change in market dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Label\u2019s core business is the virtual distribution of secure electronic tokens of value and transactional services, including prepaid\u00a0airtime vouchers.<\/p>\n<p>In reporting its interim results for the half year ended November 2013,\u00a0Blue Label noted that MTN lost 4% market share in terms of\u00a0prepaid airtime revenue to 32%, from 36%, with Cell C adding 5% to 17% through to November 2013.<\/p>\n<p>This represents a 11% decline in revenue share for the yellow network, while Cell C climbed over 40%.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom meanwhile, slipped one percentage point, to 50%, with Telkom\u00a0stagnant\u00a0at 1%.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53362\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Revenue-Growth-by-Network_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53362\" class=\" wp-image-53362\" alt=\"Revenue Growth by Network\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Revenue-Growth-by-Network_.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-53362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Revenue Growth by Network<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In audited results\u00a0for the year ended May 2013, Blue Label noted that\u00a0<a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1641-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a>\u00a0had gained traction in the market regarding prepaid airtime sales and starter packs, up 2% to 12% in terms of contributions to Blue Label\u2019s revenue in the segment.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a>\u00a0accounted from 51%, unchanged from the prior period, while\u00a0<a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a>\u00a0slipped 2% to 38% of revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Label joint CEO, Brett Levy said that South Africa consumers were generally lethargic when it comes to adopting change, \u201cbut when they do, it happens very quickly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In November, acting CEO at Cell C,\u00a0<a title=\"Jose Dos Santos\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/5349-Jose-Dos-Santos\">Jose Dos Santos<\/a>, said that the operator had hit 13 million subscribers for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>In September,\u00a0<a title=\"Alan Knott-Craig\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1642-Alan-Knott-Craig-%28Senior%29\">Alan Knott-Craig<\/a>\u00a0said that Cell C&#8217;s subscriber\u00a0base had grown 33% to 12.3 million customers in just 18 months.
