{"id":53522,"date":"2014-02-24T09:34:13","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T07:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=53522"},"modified":"2014-02-24T11:52:47","modified_gmt":"2014-02-24T09:52:47","slug":"naspers-restructures-e-commerce-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/53522\/naspers-restructures-e-commerce-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Naspers restructures e-commerce business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listed media and internet group Naspers is in the process of restructuring top management as well as its online retailer portfolio as the company positions itself to focus on stronger growth in the e-commerce sector.<\/p>\n<p>MIH Internet Africa Group, the Internet arm of Naspers in Africa, has confirmed that it is considering closing some non-core &#8216;e-tailer&#8217; brands such as Style36 and 5 Rooms, with the company currently &#8220;consulting with staff&#8221; over the move.<\/p>\n<p>Last week (20 February 2014), four of Naspers\u2019 e-commerce websites \u2013 SACamera, 5rooms, Kinderelo and Style36 \u2013 were taken offline,\u00a0carrying a maintenance message.<\/p>\n<p>However, industry speculation suggests that Naspers is planning to pull the plug on all these ventures.<\/p>\n<p>As reasoning for the move, the company said that it will be placing all efforts behind Kalahari, which has had a very strong Christmas and has just introduced an advanced platform successfully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is going to grow Kalahari aggressively over the next year,\u201d explained Remo Giovanni Abbondandolo from Africa Internet Accelerator \u2013 the company behind Style36, 5Rooms and Kinderelo.<\/p>\n<p>Naspers\u2019 Meloy Horn said that this process does not affect other Naspers subsidiaries with e-commerce investments in Africa, including Media24, which is focusing on fashion e-commerce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedia24 continues to leverage its magazine titles to drive e-commerce activity, especially through fast-growing fashion vertical Spree, and is planning to expand substantially in this area,\u201d said Horn.<\/p>\n<p>She added that she cannot provide more details at this stage as the consultation process is on-going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a group basis we remain very excited about the future growth prospects for e-commerce and continue to build out our platforms in many markets around the world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27563\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Koos-Bekker-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27563\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27563\" alt=\"Koos Bekker\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Koos-Bekker-3.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Koos-Bekker-3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Koos-Bekker-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-27563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Koos Bekker<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Focusing on e-commerce<\/h3>\n<p>On Saturday (22 February) Naspers announced that its chief executive, Koos Bekker would be stepping down from the position in April.<\/p>\n<p>After a year off, Bekker will return in April 2015 as chairman, Naspers said.<\/p>\n<p>Bekker has driven the company through 17 years of explosive growth, which transformed a small publisher into an emerging markets giant.<\/p>\n<p>Bekker will be replaced by e-commerce chief, Bob van Dijk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In view of our strong development focus on e-commerce, the board believes that Bob has the skills to lead us into the next phase of our growth,&#8221;
