Local cultural references can be found in every country, from local football team names (for example, \u201csteelers\u201d in the US, \u201cliverpool\u201d in the UK, \u201ccolocolo\u201d in Chile, \u201cnacional\u201d in Brazil, \u201csparta\u201d in Czech Republic, \u201cmarseille\u201d in France, \u201cschalke04\u201d in Germany, \u201colympiakos\u201d in Greece, and many more) to famous local beverage names (\u201cguinness\u201d in Ireland) and religious passwords (\u201cchrist\u201d in Nigeria, \u201cbismillah\u201d in Saudi Arabia).<\/p>\n<p>For South Africa, the most common passwords included easy-to-remember number patterns and people&#8217;s names. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordpass.com\/most-common-passwords-list\/?utm_source=campaign&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Brand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The full list of 200 weakest passwords is here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The top 20 were as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>123456<\/li>\n<li>password<\/li>\n<li>12345<\/li>\n<li>123456789<\/li>\n<li>password1<\/li>\n<li>qwerty<\/li>\n<li>12345678<\/li>\n<li>1234567890<\/li>\n<li>1234<\/li>\n<li>chregan<\/li>\n<li>monkey<\/li>\n<li>P@ssw0rd<\/li>\n<li>dragon<\/li>\n<li>password123<\/li>\n<li>1234567<\/li>\n<li>liverpool<\/li>\n<li>Michael<\/li>\n<li>Michelle<\/li>\n<li>passw0rd<\/li>\n<li>joshua<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With regard to the differences among genders, the research has revealed interesting trends in various countries. For example, women tend to use such music-related passwords as \u201conedirection\u201d or \u201cjustinbieber\u201d, whereas men used such bands as \u201cmetallica\u201d and \u201cslipknot\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Another difference spotted among genders was that, overall, women used more positive and loving words, such as \u201csunshine\u201d or \u201ciloveyou\u201d. While in some countries men used such passwords too, they were generally in lower positions or not as many variations were used.<\/p>\n<p>Men tend to use more sports, especially football-related passwords. In some countries, men also used more swear words than women, said NordPass.<\/p>\n<p>There were many similarities among countries. Easy number combinations, such as the winning \u201c123456\u201d, are popular everywhere in the world. In fact, \u201c123456\u201d was the most popular password in 43 countries out of the 50 analyzed, but the top passwords in the remaining seven countries were not that different: in India, the top password was the word \u201cpassword\u201d, Indonesia \u2014 \u201c12345\u201d, Japan \u2014 \u201cpassword\u201d, Portugal \u2014 \u201c12345\u201d, Spain \u2014 \u201c12345\u201d, Thailand \u2014 \u201c12345\u201d, Ukraine \u2014 \u201cqwerty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQwerty\u201d and variations of it, or the localized versions of \u201cqwerty\u201d (for example, \u201cazerty\u201d in French-speaking countries, \u201cqwertz\u201d in German) are also popular in all the analyzed countries, the password management company said.<\/p>\n<p>The report also devised a risk index that sorts countries into three risk tiers: low, average, and high. The index has been devised according to the number of passwords leaked per capita. Russia tops this ranking, while the US comes fifth \u2014 one of the highest volumes of passwords leaked per capita (5.157).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, passwords keep getting weaker, and people still don\u2019t maintain proper password hygiene,\u201d said Jonas Karklys, CEO of NordPass. \u201cIt\u2019s important to understand that passwords are the gateway to our digital lives, and with us spending more and more time online, it\u2019s becoming enormously important to take better care of our cybersecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What do cybersecurity experts advise?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use strong and unique passwords for every account.
