{"id":542148,"date":"2021-11-28T15:07:13","date_gmt":"2021-11-28T13:07:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=542148"},"modified":"2021-11-28T15:07:13","modified_gmt":"2021-11-28T13:07:13","slug":"ramaphosa-to-address-south-africa-on-sunday-evening-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/542148\/ramaphosa-to-address-south-africa-on-sunday-evening-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa to address South Africa on Sunday evening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation at 20h00 on Sunday (28 November) on developments in the country\u2019s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa&#8217;s address come after the meeting of the National Coronovirus Command Council was moved from Sunday to Saturday, fueling speculation that tighter lockdown restrictions would be imminent.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was moved forward due to the global panic over the new Omicron Covid variant which was sequenced in Southern Africa this week.<\/p>\n<p>South African scientists and the Department of Health presented data on the variant on Thursday, cautioning that, while still in the early stages of sequencing, the variant could prove to be more transmissible and resistant to vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Despite stressing that there was not yet evidence to show this is the case \u2013 with weeks of research still needed to scope the full impact of the variant\u2019s 30-plus mutations \u2013 many countries immediately imposed travel bans and suspended flights to and from South Africa and its neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA TO ADDRESS THE NATION ON SUNDAY, 28 NOVEMBER 2021<\/p>\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation at 20h00 today, Sunday, 28 November 2021, on developments in the country\u2019s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Presidency | South Africa \ud83c\uddff\ud83c\udde6 (@PresidencyZA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PresidencyZA\/status\/1464941703966695425?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Health minister Joe Phaahla says the government has not made any decisions regarding tighter lockdown restrictions following the emergence of the Omicron Covid variant this week.<\/p>\n<p>In a briefing on Sunday afternoon, the minister said that the government is not taking the matter lightly, and that it knows the impact that tighter restrictions can have on the country and the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not made any decisions on any restrictions;
