{"id":54306,"date":"2014-03-14T00:05:49","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T22:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=54306"},"modified":"2014-03-13T16:49:28","modified_gmt":"2014-03-13T14:49:28","slug":"whats-inside-south-africas-inflation-basket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/54306\/whats-inside-south-africas-inflation-basket\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s inside South Africa&#8217;s inflation basket?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tech items feature prominently in South Africa&#8217;s Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket, aimed to measure the change in consumer prices over time.<\/p>\n<p>The CPI is a social and economic indicator constructed to measure changes in the general level of prices of consumer goods and services that households acquire, use, or pay for.<\/p>\n<p>According to StatsSA, this is done by measuring the cost of purchasing a fixed basket of consumer goods and services of constant quality and similar characteristics, with the products in the basket being selected to be representative of households\u2019 expenditure during a year or other specified period.<\/p>\n<p>Such an index is called a fixed-basket price index.<\/p>\n<p>The index also aims to measure the effects of price changes on the cost of achieving a constant standard of living.<\/p>\n<p>The South African CPI has two equally important objectives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To measure inflation in the economy so that macroeconomic policy is based on comprehensive and up-to-date price information and to provide a deflator of consumer expenditure in the expenditure national accounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>To measure changes in the cost of living of South African households to ensure equity in the measures taken to adjust wages, grants, service agreements and contracts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The BBC reported that changes in households&#8217; use of digital technology was behind several changes to the basket in Britain in 2014.
