broadband: how bad is SA?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a title=\"OECD - Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/386549-OECD-Organisation-for-Economic-Co-operation-and-Development\">Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)<\/a>\u00a0 recently published their latest broadband statistics, revealing that across the member countries there is an average of 25.1 fixed broadband connections per 100 inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands, Switzerland and Denmark are the fixed line broadband leaders with penetration rates of 38.5%, 38.3% and 37.7% respectively.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the share of DSL and cable subscription in the OECD remains stable (58.8% and 29.5%).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Fibre-to-the-home\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/235265-FTTX\">Fibre-to-the-home<\/a> subscriptions continued to grow and now represent 13% of broadband subscription (3,5% growth in six months).<\/p>\n<p>In South Africa, <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\">Telkom\u2019s<\/a> <a title=\"ADSL\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/224881-ADSL\">ADSL<\/a> service is the only consumer fixed line broadband service.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom recently revealed that they had 795,419 ADSL subscribers at the end of September 2011, translating into a penetration rate of 1.6%.<\/p>\n<p>The table below shows how South Africa compares with OECD countries when it comes to fixed broadband connections.<\/p>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\"
