{"id":54891,"date":"2014-03-26T15:43:02","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T13:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=54891"},"modified":"2014-03-26T15:43:34","modified_gmt":"2014-03-26T13:43:34","slug":"counting-the-cost-of-natural-disasters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/54891\/counting-the-cost-of-natural-disasters\/","title":{"rendered":"Counting the cost of natural disasters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Natural and man-made disasters caused over US$140 billion worth of damage in 2013, with global insurance companies forking over US$45 billion, mostly to those hit by flooding and hailstorms.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to the latest sigma study by Swiss insurance group, Swiss RE, which noted a drop in the global economic impact from disasters in 2013, down from US$196 billion in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The number of victims in disaster events, however, grew to around 26,000 in 2013 from 14,000 the previous year, the firm said.<\/p>\n<p>Global insured losses from natural catastrophes and man-made disasters were US$45 billion in 2013, down from US$81 billion in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of the 2013 insured losses, US$37 billion were generated by natural catastrophes, with hail in Europe and floods in many [other] regions being the main drivers,&#8221; with the repair and rehabilitation of bridges and culverts expected to cost an additional estimated R37 million.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, flood damage costs in other provinces and cities are also adding up &#8211; R100 million in the North West Province; over R124 million in Pretoria; and over R315 million in Limpopo province &#8211; which were all hit during the heavy rains.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54894\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Flooding-March-2014-Sapa.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54894\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54894\" alt=\"Flooding, March 2014 (Sapa)\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Flooding-March-2014-Sapa.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Flooding-March-2014-Sapa.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Flooding-March-2014-Sapa-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flooding, March 2014 (Sapa)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In late 2013, Joburg was also hit by massive hailstorms which caused heavy damage to homes and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Following the storms, Aon South Africa, insurance brokers and risk management consultants, said that insurers and consumers had barely recovered from similar damage in 2012, when well over 25,000 claims were filed and the cost of the damage was in excess of R1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>According to Swiss RE, climate change, &#8220;which is widely acknowledged to be caused by rising greenhouse gas emissions&#8221;, is seen as a big driver of extreme weather events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rising temperatures are expected to lead to more frequent and severe extreme weather events in the future.
