{"id":551666,"date":"2022-01-19T07:10:06","date_gmt":"2022-01-19T05:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=551666"},"modified":"2022-01-19T07:10:06","modified_gmt":"2022-01-19T05:10:06","slug":"omicron-may-cut-future-severity-of-coronavirus-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/551666\/omicron-may-cut-future-severity-of-coronavirus-study-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Omicron may cut future severity of Coronavirus, study shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A strong wave of coronavirus infections driven by the Omicron variant could hasten the end of pandemic disruptions as it appears to cause less severe illness and provides protection against the delta variant, South Africa-based researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>A laboratory study that used samples from 23 people infected with the Omicron variant in November and December found that while those who previously caught the Delta variant could contract Omicron, those who get the Omicron strain couldn\u2019t be infected with Delta, particularly if they have been vaccinated, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>Results among the unvaccinated were unclear, as was whether they had been previously infected.<\/p>\n<p>While Omicron is significantly more infectious than delta, hospital and mortality data in countries including South Africa &#8212; the first country to experience a wave of omicron infections &#8211; appears to show that it causes less severe disease.<\/p>\n<p>The study &#8211; an update to one conducted last year &#8211; suggests that Omicron can displace Delta, the researchers led by Alex Sigal of the Africa Health Research Institute said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe implications of such displacement would depend on whether Omicron is indeed less pathogenic than Delta,\u201d the researchers said. \u201cIf so, then the incidence of Covid-19 severe disease would be reduced and the infection may shift to become less disruptive to individuals and society.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We have an update to our study which found enhancement of Delta immunity with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Omicron?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Omicron<\/a> infection.<\/p>\n<p>We were able to add study participants to see more clearly the effect of vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>Available at <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rGaEB9GdmS\">https:\/\/t.co\/rGaEB9GdmS<\/a> and soon on medRxiv<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Alex Sigal (@sigallab) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sigallab\/status\/1483123897654517762?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The study has been published as a pre-print and has yet to be peer-reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>In South Africa, deaths during the omicron wave peaked at about 15% of the rate seen during the delta-driven surge, while hospitalizations peaked at 60% of the influx caused by delta, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 23 participants, 14 were admitted to the hospital, but only one needed supplemental oxygen, the researchers said. Ten had been vaccinated, either with shots produced by Pfizer Inc. or Johnson &amp; Johnson, but still got infected with omicron.<\/p>\n<p>World Health Organisation chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan stressed that the study showed omicron gave protection against delta only in people who were vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInfection is not a substitute for vaccination, as some are suggesting,\u201d Swaminathan said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Omicron?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Omicron<\/a> infection after vaccination increases immunity against <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Delta?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Delta<\/a> also.
