retailers climb in brand value

E-retailers, Amazon and eBay are steadily climbing the ranks of most valuable retail brands, as brick-and-mortar heavyweights start to slump.

This is according to Interbrand’s Best Retail Brands 2014 report, which ranks the top 50 brands in North America, Europ, Asia Pacific and Latin America, according to brand value.

Once again, retail super-giant Walmart topped the list with a brand value of over $131.8 billion – way above its closest competitor, Target, which ranked second at $27.1 billion.

However, despite its top ranking, Walmart was one of two retailers in the top 10 that saw its brand value shrink since 2013, on the back of sluggish sales and excess inventory.

Online retail giants, Amazon and eBay on the other hand both saw brand value growth exceeding 20%, year-on-year, with the former seeing sales boom over 22%, and the latter leading the payments world with its PayPal business.

“Rebounding from five years of economic turmoil, technology changes and altered consumer behaviors, North America’s leading retailers are still recovering their balance, making major moves to reassert their relevance,” Interbrand said.

Digital in no longer a separate conversation for US retailers, which now see themselves locked head-to-head with online giants like Amazon.

“The mad race to throw money at e-commerce, apps, QR codes, and interactive screens has come to an end – a mobile presence is a must; the new omnichannel reality has given way to ‘connected stores for connected customers’.”

According to the group, over the past year, Amazon continued its “relentless growth” to become ‘the everything store’ and is leading the rapidly growing online retail space.

“Analysts predict Amazon will soon carry more than 85% of the product sold at leading retailers—including groceries with Amazon Fresh—at better prices, with more delivery methods and payment options,” Interbrand said.

<h3
