{"id":55575,"date":"2014-04-10T15:35:15","date_gmt":"2014-04-10T13:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=55575"},"modified":"2014-04-10T15:35:15","modified_gmt":"2014-04-10T13:35:15","slug":"telkom-customers-targetted-in-fraud-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/55575\/telkom-customers-targetted-in-fraud-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom customers targetted in fraud scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom has warned its subscribers about fraudsters targeting Telkom customers using counterfeit cheques and false letterheads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey deposit a stolen or counterfeit cheque into a customer\u2019s account and then, on a false Telkom letterhead, inform the customer that Telkom had erroneously deposited the cheque into the customer\u2019s account as reimbursement for overpayment collected on their telephone account,\u201d explained Thokozani Mvelase, Telkom Group Executive for Enterprise Risk Management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis letter is usually delivered to the customer by hand or via email,\u201d said Mvelase.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the customer is then requested to transfer the amount into a bank account that is purported to be under Telkom\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis transaction usually happens before the cheque is cleared by the bank. As such, the customer\u2019s account would be fraudulently debited with the cheque amount while the initial cheque deposit is declined by the bank,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fraudsters would, in the interim, have withdrawn the cash from the \u2018Telkom\u2019 account, thus leaving the customer out of pocket for the value of the initial cheque deposit amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Telkom customers are urged to be on the alert and to do the following should they receive a \u201cTelkom\u201d or unknown cheque deposit in their bank accounts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phone the nearest Telkom Customer Service Branch and confirm whether there was indeed a cheque issued in lieu of an overpayment;<\/li>\n<li>Ask for a show of a Telkom ID card, from a person delivering the letter if it is delivered in person.
